Investment Opportunity Scoping Study for Dimension Stone Processing and Beneficiation Activities in the Greater Taung Local unicipality (GTLM)

Invest North West (INW) appointed Mthente to undertake an investment opportunity scoping study. The aim of this study was to assess the technical feasibility and economic viability of undertaking niche value adding and beneficiation activities in the dimension stone processing industry in the Greater Taung Local Municipality (GTLM).  INW had identified the beneficiation of dimension stone as a potentially lucrative industry for the GTLM area, with the potential to contributing to the economic development objectives in the province and in the country more broadly.   Through the investment scoping study INW hoped to identify the needs and requirements for the successful implementation of beneficiation/value adding activities that could contribute to job creation, technology transfer and skills development opportunities.

The research was informed by extensive desktop research into the policy and economic context of GTLM and the NW Province, as well as into the market potential for the dimension stone, in-depth stakeholder and expert interviews, a value chain analysis and through case studies of South African companies and/or entrepreneurs already operating in the dimension stone industry.   From this top dimension stone products with the greatest potential to succeed were identified, and a comprehensive report with recommendations was presented to INW.
