Goat Meat Production and Processing Opportunity Scoping Study

Invest North West

Invest North West (INW) commissioned Mthente to undertake an opportunity scoping study in order to investigate the technical and economic viability and potential value of promoting goat meat production and processing activities in the North West Province.   The principal aim of the study was to investigate whether goats farmed in the North West had significant economic value, could supply a market sustainably, were of good quality, were well managed, and were receiving adequate bio-security and technical attention from the government.

The research was informed by desktop research that provided an overview of the size, scope and capacity of the goat meat production and processing sub-sector (globally, nationally and in the North West) and a review of existing government policies and strategies and relevant legislation and regulatory frameworks governing the sub-sector. Following this 13 one-on-one interviews were held with experts and a full value chain analysis was undertaken to identify the investment opportunities in the sub-sector, as well as to identify areas to promote backward, forward and horizontal linkages
